Mottola’s Zone Control Video Series
This series is designed in an easy-flowing, logical sequence, going from the simple to the complex. It takes a real approach to in-car teaching, allowing a quick transfer of classroom learning to in-car sessions, which makes behind-the-wheel time more productive. These interactive videos allow students to make decisions and gain understanding in a relaxed environment conducive to learning. An instructor’s guide describes classroom and in-car activities that can be used with each of the eleven modules:
Module One: Reference Points (23 minutes) Through practice provided during this module, drivers will be able to maneuver the vehicle exactly where they want it, with precision every time, by understanding the relationship of the vehicle to the roadway.
Module Two: Targeting (15 minutes) The trainee is introduced to targeting, a concept for developing good searching habits. Identifying the condition of the target area gives the driver a clear picture of what to expect ahead in the vehicle’s intended path of travel.
Module Three: Precision Turns (15 minutes) Precision turns are beneficial to novice drivers for routine turns as well as to the experienced driver for advanced skid control techniques. Knowing the effect side positioning, forward positioning, and targeting have upon the outcome of a turn allows the driver to achieve consistently accurate performance.
Module Four: Mottola’s Zone Control For Awareness (38 minutes) The trainee is introduced to Zone Control, a system which allows one to see and respond to changes in the traffic environment at a time when best control can be achieved. This systematic process is continually repeated to develop behavioral patterns into habits so that the driver may identify and solve problems before they become high-risk, stressful situations.
Module Five: Habit Development (16 minutes) The trainee is presented with rationale and motivation to encourage the development of low-risk, high-gain habit formation. The importance of knowing what are correct behavioral patterns and the necessity for having correct performance take place on a habitual level are demonstrated during this module.
Module Six: Searching Intersections (20 minutes) Techniques for searching the left, front and right zones before entering an intersection are developed. An intersection represents the single highest environmental risk for multiple vehicle crashes. Searching techniques learned in this module set the stage for effective in-car practice sessions.
Module Seven: Approaching Curves (28 minutes) The highest risk location for single vehicle crashes, especially for the youthful driver, is approaching curves. Most of the crashes that take place at a curve result from the driver’s failure to assess and select an effective speed. This module shows the variable factors affecting speed control and how to establish behavioral patterns for low-risk habits.
Module Eight: Rear Zone Control (27 minutes) How and when to use the mirrors and what to look for are demonstrated in this module. Knowing when the rear zone is open, closed or unstable increases sensitivity to high-risk rear zone situations.
Module Nine: Following Time and Space (27 minutes) The driver experiences how and why four seconds of following interval will result in the best habit to minimize stress and maximize control. Situations for space management while following a vehicle on a rural roadway, limited access highway, and urban streets instill in the learner a strong appreciation of the advantages to be gained from maintaining effective following space.
Module Ten: Backing and Parking (20 minutes) Systematic techniques for parking are presented step-by-step. This module gives the trainee rationale for developing good backing habits. Upon the completion of this module, and with the application of reference points, the trainee is able to position any vehicle with consistency and accuracy while backing.
Module Eleven: Zone Control Practice (15 minutes) Various situations present the trainee with opportunities to apply the principles, concepts and procedures of Mottola’s Zone Control Driving System. This module concludes with segments that allow the trainee to use a “practice commentary” in the classroom to demonstrate necessary in-vehicle performance as effective behavior modeling for habit development.
